One Less Gun: At about 7:37 PM on Friday, September 18, 2020, officers assigned to District B-2 (Roxbury) made two on-site arrests and recovered a loaded firearm in the area of Washington Street and Roxbury Street in Roxbury. While on patrol in the area of Tremont Street and Melnea Cass Boulevard, officers queried a white Jeep Grand Cherokee which was flagged as a stolen vehicle. Officers followed the vehicle on Tremont Street to Malcolm X Boulevard where the speed of the vehicle began to accelerate. Officers activated their lights and sirens in an effort to warn on-coming traffic of the vehicle’s increasingly erratic operation. Officers disengaged the vehicle, but continued to update on its location before completely losing sight of the vehicle.Additional officers responding to a separate call heard the broadcast for the stolen vehicle, and subsequently observed the white Jeep operating at a high rate of speed in the area of Washington Street and Roxbury Street. The vehicle took a right-hand turn onto Guild Street where the operator struck a parked motor vehicle. Officers observed three males exit the Jeep, fleeing in different directions. Officers converged on the scene and pursued the three males. One of the males was apprehended immediately, while other officers pursued the remaining two. Officers observed one of the males running with his hand pinned to his right side. The officers pursued the male who turned around and while facing officers, brandished a shiny silver object, before throwing it in the area of Marvin Street and Shawmut Avenue. The item, a black and silver Ruger SR40C loaded with nine rounds of live ammunition, was secured by officers. The male who threw the firearm was taken into custody. The third occupant of the vehicle was also apprehended in the area of 2360 Washington Street.Officers arrested the operator, Jashaun Tyrell Benalfew, 18-years-old, of Providence and the front seat passenger who threw the firearm, a 16-year-old male of Roxbury. Both are expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court. Benalfew is charged with Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Operating a Motor Vehicle without a License, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon, Failure to Stop for a Police Officer, and Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle. The juvenile male is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Resisting Arrest.The third male, the rear passenger, was identified and released.
